Election Day is Tuesday November 7. While we are glad this Campaign Trail is ending, we are thankful for all fine people we have come to meet and/or become reacquainted with. Remember to Vote! Hope you vote for us, but if not, thank you for your time.
A resident walking her dog says, “I want to vote for you, Julia, I like you, but your organization [referring to TybeeMLK] is all about racial stuff. We don’t need that at City Hall.”
We listen and attempt to explain, “We started Tybee MLK Human Rights Organization 10 years ago as a service to the citizens of Tybee. Dr. King’s Federal Holiday was 20+ years old and residents requested a local parade.
The City had just begun recognition of the King Federal Holiday, after Diane Denson Schleicher, the newly hired City Manager changed the City tradition of a personal employee birthday off or King Holiday.
The work TybeeMLK has done over the past 10 years is about community. All of our community, Before TybeeMLK, we did not talk about the entire history of our island. Only one side of our rich, compelling story had been told. What you call “Racial Stuff” is American History.
If elected Mayor, I will step down as Provost/ Coordinator for TybeeMLK Human Rights Organization. However, I do strongly believe the City of Tybee Island needs a Cultural Affairs Department like any other American city.
Justice is what love looks like in public.
